Digital Citizen Lesson

This lesson helps students understand the responsibilities and rights of digital citizen. This power point slide show starts with agree or disagree statements to help establish what the students think and know about digital citizenship. Designed to be used for high school students, it is equally useful for middle school.
While researching for this lesson, I was struck by how vulnerable we are today, thanks to the internet. I have re-evaluated my personal use of social media. More importantly, I have reminded my teenaged children of the dangers, risks, and responsibilities of using social media, and being smart consumers of the internet in general.
Digital citizenship addresses ISTE Standard 4 for teachers:
Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility. Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.
a. Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
b. Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources
c. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information
d. Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools.
