You will create a self-portrait tile that uses symbolism. You will make a minimum of 3 sketches with your ideas. These sketches will hold meaning for you- they can include your face, or not, include a landscape, animal, scene from a sport, something scary, etc. Use the Principles of Design (emphasis, movement, balance, pattern, variety, unity, contrast) to guide your drawing- you will be graded on it! In addition, you should include 2 areas of texture, and 3 levels of relief.
Together, we will pick your best sketch, and then re-sketch it on newsprint, with the correct dimensions (up to 6” x 6”). Then you will roll out a slab of clay and transfer the drawing to the clay using a needle tool or your paper clip tool. You will begin to add and carve away clay. Always remember to score and slip when you add clay! I will be looking for areas of light and shadows. Tiles must dry very slowly and stay flat. Do not peel your tile up from your work surface one you have rolled it out!.
